27th April 2015The CEP-supported Roundtable meetings have become a platform for development organizations with active adaptation programs in the GMS to share knowledge, brainstorm approaches, and engage in an ongoing dialogue.
Since its inception in March 2013, the Roundtable has contributed to a stronger recognition of national capital and climate resilience in the Fourth GMS Environment Ministers’ Meeting (EMM4) Joint Ministerial Statement; to two joint knowledge products (on natural capital and ecosystem-based adaptation) distributed at the EMM4; and to the enhanced information and knowledge for adaptation distributed through the CEP website.
Taking forward the 2014 outcomes, this first Roundtable of 2015 --the sixth in the Roundtable series—discussed challenges and opportunities related to a common area of work of the Roundtable partners i.e. climate vulnerability assessment across scales. The discussion focused on how to link these works at the regional, watershed and community scales for better impact and learning, how to produce outputs that suit different users, and how to inform different policies and investments in the GMS.
In addition, the partners reflected on the Roundtable’s influence at the EMM4 and brainstormed a strategy for this collaborative mechanism going forward. In this context, the partners engaged in the first joint envisioning exercise. Key conderations in sketching a future vision included improved spatial coordination of the partners’ efforts, identification of flagship test cases for approaches and tools, and better institutionalization of the knowledge generated through the partners’ activities.
The Sixth Roundtable was co-organized by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Asia Center and the GMS Environment Operations Center. Partner representatives attended from the USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia (RDMA), the Mekong Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change Project (USAID), Southeast Asia START, US Forest Service, the Mekong Region Futures Institute (MERFI), and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Bangkok Regional Center.

This workshop was organized within the context of a UN ESCAP project entitled “Pro-poor and sustainable solid waste management in secondary cities and small towns”. As part of this project, ESCAP is exploring the potential for NAMAs to serve as “win-win” strategies i.e. as ways of promoting sustainable approaches to solid waste management, while at the same time reducing GHG emissions.
The objective of the workshop was to review the current status on the development of NAMAs and discuss future prospects for the waste sector. Naeeda Crishna Morgado, Climate Change Mitigation Specialist at EOC, presented an overview of prospective NAMA development with respect to freight transport in the GMS.
